Your help, please:

To help us arrange the best possible match, please let us know the days and times when you are available, as well your geographic preferences. Be as specific as possible.

Preferences: geographic area, days and times, etc.

Step-by-Step

  1. Application
Everyone interested in becoming a volunteer will be asked to complete a written application. Information such as personal interests and experience can assist us in the matching process.

  2. Interview
After an application is received, the candidate is scheduled for an interview, usually conducted at READ! 365 by the Volunteer Coordinator. This is an opportunity to get to know each other and determine the right placement for you.

  3. Act 33 / 34 Clearances
Most agencies serving children require that volunteers and staff obtain Act 33 and 34 clearances. These background checks, completed by the PA Department of Public Welfare and the State Police, assist agencies in verifying that the potential volunteer does not have a history of child abuse or criminal behavior. There is a $10 fee for each clearance.

  4. Training / Orientation
Training / Orientation is essential. Not only does it give you the basics on how to be a “Star Performer,” it also clarifies expectations and helps to explain policies and procedures. The length and scope of training / orientation vary, depending on the literacy agency with whom you are matched.

  5. Commitment
Relationships need time to grow, so we ask that you commit to volunteering weekly for a minimum of six months.
